Songfacts®:

  • This tropical-tinged track features Justin Bieber singing lovelorn lyrics in which he pleads to his girl not to give up on their relationship.

    Don't you give up, nah-nah-nah
    I won't give up, nah-nah-nah
    Let me love you

Bieber wrote the song with former California Breed guitarist Andrew Watt, Korean-American songwriter Brian Lee (Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time," Fifth Harmony's "Work from Home") and Ali Tamposi (Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)"). The original demo was presented to DJ Snake by his A&R Nick Audino, which the French DJ then produced out.
  • The lyrics are rumored to be about Bieber's ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, who shared a Snapchat clip of herself lip-syncing to a song with a similar chorus. Her version, which Gomez shared a few days before Encore's release, had prompted many to think she'd be on the track with the Canadian.
  • The song came out of the first writing session that Andrew Watt, Brian Lee and Ali Tamposi had together. They recorded a demo on acoustic guitars that made its way to DJ Snake, asked for new verses, which they supplied in another writing session. Watt was friends with Justin Bieber, which is how they got him the track.
  • Love and Death, the side project of Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch, covered this for their 2021 Perfectly Preserved album. Their version features vocalist Lacey Sturm, formerly of Flyleaf.
