Chant Down Greenham

Album: Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp Songbook (1981)

Songfacts®:

  • Written in 2/4 time, the words are credited to Alana O'Kelly, with additional lyrics by the women of Greenham. No, this is not a village choral production. RAF Station Greenham Common in Berkshire was opened as a joint RAF/USAF base in World War Two and remained open until 1993. In 1981, a "peace camp" was started by the usual suspects, a group of women - or "wimmin" as they were sometimes known. The camp attracted massive protests and became one of the central focuses of CND.
  • "Chant Down Greenham" appears in The Anti-Nuclear Songbook Completely Revised, published by Mushroom and Peace News, 2nd Revised edition. Any suspicion that it might have been inspired by "Chant Down Babylon" should be dismissed forthwith. >>>
