Songfacts®:

  • Lauv wrote "Sad Forever" on a plane during a time when he was struggling with depression and OCD.

I don't wanna be sad forever
I don't wanna go one more day
I just wanna wake up and realize
    Everything's gonna be okay

Eventually Lauv came to the realization that what he was doing wasn't working and he needed to get help.

I'm coming through to the other side
I'll make it through to tomorrow
'Cause that's all I can do today

Lauv said: "It's an ongoing journey with ups and downs and finding stability is a process that I'm still heavily working on."
  • Lauv released the song because he wanted to remove the stigma of mental illness and "help others take their first step to get help, too." All proceeds are being donated to a host of mental health organizations.
  • The accompanying video was shot live during Lauv's May 20, 2019 headlining concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines.
  • "Sad Forever" is included on Lauv's debut album How I'm Feeling. The tracks are all pulled from the singer's own experience of grappling with anxiety before finding help. This song finds Lauv recalling a time when he didn't really understand what he was experiencing.

"All I knew was that I was super anxious, and I felt super low, and I felt super disconnected from everybody and everything in my life," he remembered to Radio.com. "I was having a lot of obsessive thoughts, but I didn't know how to recognize what that was."

"That song will always remind me of that moment," Lauv added, "right before I decided to actually go and see a psychiatrist and do all the stuff that actually ended up helping me a lot."
