Songfacts®:

  • Written and recorded during Motley Crüe's February 2012 Las Vegas residency, this was the first new song released by the band since 2008's Saints Of Los Angeles album.
  • Drummer Tommy Lee told Noisecreep that he feels the song's sound both harks back to their early 1980s work as well as a modern vibe. "It's got a retro Crüe kind of vibe to it - a simplistic riff," he said. "But I also think the song has a modern sound to it. There's some cool analog synths in it and a beat that is really funky and modern. So I guess you can say that it has a retro yet modern sound."

"Overall, I think that 'Sex' sounds like 2012 and that makes me really happy," he continued. "It turned out killer! Not that I'm not into some retro-sounding stuff, but it is 2012 kids - let's keep it moving."
  • The song was distributed free to Motley Crue's fan club members and later sent to digital retailers, as a placeholder before the release of the follow-up to Saints of Los Angeles. "We happened to have this song everyone was really excited about, so instead of saying, 'Let's add it to the pile of songs we have and we'll sort 'em out later,' we were, 'Hey, let's finish this one up,'" bassist Nikki Sixx recalled to Billboard magazine.
