Songfacts®:

  • This was released on July 28, 2015 to promote New Order's Music Complete album. It was the first new material from New Order since their 2005 single "Waiting for the Sirens' Call."

"Restless" was also the band's first release to feature Tom Chapman, who replaced former bassist and founding member Peter Hook in 2011.
  • The song finds frontman Bernard Sumner venting about greed, consumption and the modern world:

    Restless
    I am so restless
    And this changing world
    Leaves me speechless

Speaking to Q magazine Sumner warned us not to read too much into what he sings about, saying: "You've got to watch it with my lyrics. You can't assume they're autobiographical. A lot aren't about me because I'm quite a private person. I was kind of thrust into writing lyrics so I scout around for things to write about instead of writing about myself."
