Songfacts®:

  • Kojo Kankam, better known by his stage name Novelist, has been politically motivated from a young age - in 2012 he stood for the position of Lewisham's young mayor coming second. After serving a term as deputy mayor he began pursuing his musical career and after signing to XL Records, home to Adele and Radiohead, he subsequently launched his own label named MMMYEH Records, for the release of his own politically charged music as well as his friends.
  • This song from the grime MC's debut album Novelist Guy finds him protesting about the epidemic of violence on London streets over a clubby bombardment. The hook features the rapper barking the title like a drill sergeant multiple times. ("Mandem" is UK street slang used for a group of friends or homies). Novelist explained to Q Magazine his vision for the track.

"Too many people are dying, fam. People need to start acknowledging what's happening, and not acting like their words don't have some kind of effect."
  • The song is titled after a sign that Novelist painted for a Black Lives Matter march.
