Album: Appeal To Reason (2008)

Songfacts®:

  • Guitarist Zach Blair explained to Ultimate Guitar how this song's lyrical content and oompah-oompah instrumentation fit together perfectly: "For me, if you listen to the lyrics it so makes sense musically and that's one thing I thought was pretty genius on Tim (McIlrath's) part. The music kind of plays with (what) the lyrics are talking about like basically being a puppet to the industry and that sort of a thing. It really helps the visual along."
  • This song came soon after the introduction of the iPhone and the rise of social media. Even then, it was clear (at least to Rise Against) that these diversions could allow the powers-that-be to exploit the placated masses willing to give up privacy and a degree of freedom for entertainment.
  • "Entertainment" is part of the Appeal To Reason album, which brought Rise Against to a new level after making steady progress since their formation in 1999. MTV, which played the videos more frequently and initiated news coverage on the band, had a lot to do with it.

  • Neva from Gonna, MeI believe that this song is about the Armed Forces fighting for our country. All we hear is the news, and the bad stuff. This war has gotten to a point where many people are not supporting our troups. And as one person told me (not a joke) "The army is more of entertainment, just make a show about it." SUPPORT OUR TROUPS!!!!!!! This was isnt over yet, and until the day it is, i will not stop my support.
