Songfacts®:

  • "Cold December" finds Rod Wave showing his softer side as he talks about his love experiences. He recalls on the sole verse:

His unnamed high school girlfriend. As they got older, they changed and grew apart.

A girlfriend Dee, who he fell for "hard and fast." Wave abandoned Dee after getting her pregnant.

Someone he lost interest with after a holiday in Puerto Rico. Wave can't even remember her name.

A girl named Brianna. He met Brianna through her friend Kearra, and she was with him during his come-up.
  • Wave portrays himself as a romantic who falls in love easily but has commitment issues. The title speaks of the loneliness of spending the holidays on your own. The singer remains optimistic he will eventually meet a girl he'll want to spend the rest of his life with. Then he will have no more "Cold Decembers."
  • Rod Wave's go-to producer, TnTXD, helmed "Cold December" along with JB, Lukecmon, and ThatBossEvan. They concocted a trap-laced, loosely country-flavored backing track that starts and ends with a pitch-shifted sample of Hank Williams Jr.'s 1979 track "O.D.'d In Denver."
  • Rod Wave first shared a snippet of "Cold December" on social media in June 2021. Despite the track receiving a positive reception, the artist said four months later during an Instagram Live session he would "probably never" release the ballad. Something or someone changed his mind, maybe his record label, and he dropped the song on January 17, 2022.
