Songfacts®:

  • This cover of Taylor Swift's hit tune, transforms it from a synth-pop song to a string-laced fingerpicking ditty.

The track is from Ryan Adam's top-to-bottom cover album of Taylor Swift's 1989. He told USA Today the reason he did the record. "I had been listening to 1989 off and on, and I could hear what I thought was a sort of pain in there," Adams said. "Maybe I only just saw it that way, but I could hear the lyrics, and I thought, 'There's something in there, and I want to know how far it goes.'"
  • When Taylor Swift found out the news that Adams was recording his own version of 1989 she responded by tweeting: "Ryan's music helped shape my songwriting. This is surreal and dreamlike."
  • Ryan Adams' 1989 cover LP made history when it debuted at #7 on the US album chart. Swift's original was right behind at #8, meaning that the two releases of 1989 became the first set of identical albums (in terms of track listing) to rank in the Billboard 200 Top 10 at the same time.
