Songfacts®:

  • Recorded in the band's last couple days in the studio, this track almost didn't make it on to Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray album, but eventually was chosen as the follow up to the lead single "Country Song." Frontman Shaun Morgan said of the track, "I think ['Tonight'] captures and summarizes the hopeful sentiment of the album."
  • Morgan is Seether's lyricist and he told Artist Direct that he worked harder on this album's lyrics than on any of the band's previous four records. He explained: "Everything was scrutinized down to the very last detail. For the first time ever, I actually wrote and printed out lyrics way beforehand rather than writing them five minutes before singing them for the first time. I definitely felt like I was pushing myself to be better at what I do than before because I hold [producer] Brendan O'Brien in such high esteem. I didn't want to disappoint him and make him think, 'Awe s--t, I'm working with some idiot.' [Laughs]

I would've been mortified by that because he's worked with great lyricists like Brandon Boyd from Incubus, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, and Bruce Springsteen. These are people that he's worked with, and now he's taking the chance to work with us. I felt a little pressure. He was cool though. He had a lot of faith in us and in me. Because of that, I got through it and felt more confident this time when I was actually writing and creating. Brendan had my back the whole time. He said, 'I think what you do is great. You know what you do is great.' I thought if I had a guy like that in my corner that's a huge compliment. That started coming through in the lyrics and singing."
  • Seether drummer John Humphrey recalled to Audio Ink Radio the first time Morgan played the song to bass player Dale Stuart and himself: "Each day on the way to the studio, we would stop at Starbucks or another coffee shop to get our morning coffee before going into the studio, because we were on Brendan's day schedule, and we're kind of night owls, so we definitely partook in the caffeine to kind of jump start. We were sitting in line at Starbucks, and Shaun started playing the demo off his iPod, and we were like, 'This song is awesome, man.'"
  • The song was used by the WWE for a tribute to retired superstar the Edge.

  • Rob from Moose Jaw, SkI think you can really tell the amount of thought he (Morgan) put into these lyrics, as compared to his previous albums; this one feels alive, musically and emotionally. Great track.
