Songfacts®:

  • During this disco-tinged self-love song, Sigrid sings of learning to love herself. The Norwegian pop singer addresses a former lover during the verses, apologizing to him for breaking away from their relationship. She needed to be on her own before she could start accepting herself.

By the time we get to the chorus, Sigrid is full of confidence and has fallen in love with the person she sees in the mirror.
  • Sigrid wrote the song with the Norwegian songwriter Caroline Ailin and frequent Chainsmokers collaborator Emily Warren. Ailen and Warren also co-wrote Dua Lipa's hit songs "New Rules" and "Don't Start Now."
  • Danish producer Sly helmed the track. His other credits include Chainsmokers' "Side Effects" and Dua Lipa's "We're Good."
  • Sigrid released the upbeat bop on May 26, 2021 as her first new song since her March 2019 debut album Sucker Punch.
  • Sigrid performed the track live for the first time on the May 28, 2021 episode of Later… with Jools Holland.
  • Femke Huurdeman directed the video, which shows Sigrid in different vignettes showing the power of self-love. "We wanted to explore how conflicting it can feel to have different sides of yourself competing against each other, and not working together," the Norwegian songstress said. "And as I can't stand still whilst singing, there's a lot of dancing, running, driving – you can tell I had a great time on the shoot."
  • Sigrid wrote the song in part as a message to herself. "I needed to hear 'Mirror' when we wrote it," she told NME. "This is an industry of perfection and I want to do as well as I can, but I still need to hear that it's OK to do your best and that is good enough. I get really paranoid and up in my own head about not being good at something straight away, then I remember Mirror's message of: 'Just love yourself – just have fun with it.'"
  • Sigrid released "Mirror" as the lead single from her How To Let Go album. The album got its title because the Norwegian singer wrote a number of songs about letting go. Both "Mirror" and the second single, "Burning Bridges," are about Sigrid making a clean break from a relationship and moving on. "I'm a very private person and so the funny thing about me writing these new vulnerable songs is I forgot that I have to talk to people about them," she told The Sun.
