Songfacts®:

  • "Starts With Me" features a vocal contribution from Christian hip-hop artist Aaron Cole with production from Cole Walowac (Capital Kings). The song addresses race relations from both perspectives as the pair talk about the homes they were raised in. Toby Mac told Billboard:

"I do think that coming from both perspectives is important. I say some bold things about how we're reared, and about the household I was raised in. He's saying things about the household he was raised in, the type of things that were passed down to us from generation to generation. We weren't shy about or coy about saying exactly the things we both experienced."
  • The song includes some samples from Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I have a dream speech."
