Songfacts®:

  • Trip Lee tends to base his songs around a particular message he wants to convey. These are often religious in nature, but the themes he touches on are deep, broad, and usually universal. This is the case with "Covenant Eyes", which explores the struggles of trying to not completely give in to empty lust in a society drenched in vapid sexual imagery. The title refers to how you must have "covenant eyes" to view all this without losing yourself - covenant referring to a solemn religious pact to act in a certain manner.
  • "The Invasion" is a punchy, hard song that takes its message and wraps it up in strong, metaphorical lyrics. Lee explores both his own struggles and American culture's struggles at large to find meaning in a superficial mainstream culture. His conclusion is that a strong sense of self, combined with faith in God (or, perhaps, anything) can allow you to keep a pure state of mind. "And if I listen to the TV then you can catch me chasin' plenty chicks", he raps, "cause homie they fine. But I DDT my mind...I belong to my God and I can't let no lust steal me".
  • The song appeared on Trip Lee's third album, 2010's Between Two Worlds. The album was the first rap album to go to #1 on the Christian charts, and won a stellar award for Best Hip Hop Album.
  • Speaking of Between Two Worlds to The Gospel Coalition, Lee said that "with this album, my desire was to help people see every day life properly. Specifically, life in a world where everything seems to go wrong. So the album is really a collection of reflections on life in a fallen world."
