    Ah, yeah

    Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat
Summer's here and the time is right
    For dancing in the street

They're dancing in Chicago (they'll be dancing)
Down in New Orleans (dancing in the streets)
Up in New York City (dancing in the streets)

All we need is music (sweet, sweet)
    Sweet music (sweet sweet music)
    There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swinging, swaying, records playing
    Dancing in the streets, oh

It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there, so come on
Grab a guy, grab a girl, everywhere around the world

There'll be dancing, dancing in the streets
(Oh) It's just an invitation, across the nation
A chance for the folks to meet
There'll be laughing and singing, music swinging
    Dancing in the streets

Philadelphia, PA (dancin' in the street)
Baltimore, in D.C. now (dancin' in the streets)
Can't forget the Motor City (dancin' in the streets)

All we need is music (sweet, sweet)
    Sweet music (sweet sweet music)
    There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swinging, swaying, records playing
    Dancing in the streets, oh

It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there, so come on
Grab your guy, grab your girl, everywhere around the world

    Wow
    Hey hey hey
    Ow yeah, ow

Dancin', they're dancin' in the street
    (Dancin' in the streets)

Way down in L.A. every day
    (Dancin' in the streets)
    They're dancin' in the street
    (Dancin' in the streets)

    San Francisco way (ooh-ooh-ooh)
    (Dancin' in the streets)
They do it every day now
    (Dancin' in the streets)
Across the ocean blue (ooh-ooh-ooh) me an' you
    (Dancin' in the streets)
    Dancin' in the street

  • Ken Hensley from Californiaevery cover of "Dancing In The Street" that I've heard has been worse than the one that preceded it. I'd list the Van Halen, Grateful Dead and Mamas and Papas covers as being the 3 worse. It's amazing some people don't realize when a song's definitive version exists and shouldn't be covered.
  • Jake from Salt Lake, UtDavid Lee Roth Was Believed To Be A Big Jim Dandy Fan From The Band Black Oak Arkansas Which Covered Dancin In The Streets On The Album Street Party In 1974
  • Luke from Manchester, EnglandYes, Mick Jagger and David Bowie covered it in the 80s
  • Kevin from Breda, NetherlandsThe Who also made a Cover on their BBC Sessions album
  • Pudgemuffin from Buffalo, NyThe Mamas And the Papas also did a cover of this song.
  • Ted from Loveland, CoFor the second year in a row, Van Halen was notably absent from the list of nominees for next years Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (this is the second year they've been eligible)
  • Joel from Montreal, CanadaThe Grateful Dead covered this on the 1977 album Terrapin Station. Excellent album, excellent cover.
  • Tim from Hendersonville, TnMick Jagger and *I think* David Bowie did another cover of this as well. It had more of a horn section in it, but they copied the VH bass line, which was not in the original Martha & the Vandellas version.
